New research from Zero Carbon Academy (ZCA) forecasts that global Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales will reach 27.5 million annually by 2031, as the EV market transitions from early adoption to a more mature phase characterised by technological innovation, infrastructure development and changing global trade dynamics.
The findings come from ZCA's latest Electric Vehicles & Charging Infrastructure 2026-2031 research, which analyses global EV adoption, charging deployment, battery technologies, and policy developments across key markets.
Market growth continues despite regional challenges
While growth has slowed in some mature Western markets, notably ZCA's research finds that global EV adoption remains resilient. The report highlights significant regional variation, with Asia-Pacific expected to continue leading market expansion, supported by strong manufacturing capacity, policy support and consumer demand.
The research also finds that trade restrictions, tariffs and localisation policies are becoming increasingly important factors influencing global EV supply chains and investment decisions.
Charging infrastructure and grid integration become critical
As EV adoption increases, the focus is shifting beyond vehicles themselves. The report identifies charging infrastructure deployment, smart charging technologies and grid integration as some of the most important challenges and opportunities facing the industry over the coming decade.
Businesses and policymakers will need to address growing electricity demand while ensuring charging networks remain accessible, reliable and cost-effective.
Advances in battery technology support adoption
Battery innovation continues to play a central role in EV adoption with emerging technologies, including solid-state and sodium-ion batteries, having the potential to improve vehicle range, charging times and safety, while reducing dependency on constrained supply chains.
Lauren Foye, Head of Market Research & Consultancy at ZCA, commented:
"While growth has slowed in some mature markets, the global EV industry continues to evolve at pace. Our research found that adoption remains robust overall, supported by advances in battery technology, expanding charging networks and stronger long-term policy commitments. At the same time, shifting trade regulations, increasing competition and the growing importance of grid integration are reshaping the market. This report provides an evidence-based assessment of the trends, challenges and opportunities that will define the sector through to 2031."
