Overshoot day reached on 6^th September 2026

A new report from Swiss consultancy Earth Action has revealed the date this year on which global plastic waste generation surpassed the world's ability to manage it responsibly, which fell on 6^th September 2026- two days later than last year.

The researchers explained that this can be equated to plastic waste being well managed over the first 250 days of 2026, with the remaining 116 days seeing plastic waste mismanaged; ending up as pollution in the environment. 

Earth Action explains that well-managed waste includes incineration, sanitary landfills, and recycling, as these are systems designed to prevent environmental leakage. Whereas mismanaged waste includes dumpsites, unsanitary landfills, other types of improper disposal, littered or uncollected waste, which all pose a high risk of plastic leakage into nature. Once Plastic Overshoot Day has been reached, all additional plastic waste generated globally is estimated to exceed the world's capacity to manage it responsibly, increasing the risk of pollution in rivers, oceans, soils and wider ecosystems

The study found that just 12 countries are responsible for 60% of the world’s mismanaged plastic waste in 2026, representing 69 days of overshoot. These are: China, India, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, United States, Nigeria, and Turkey.

Further, each nation has its own plastic Overshoot Day, with Eritrea (9^th January), Ethiopia (16^th January), and Kuwait (20^th January) seeing theirs passed earliest in the year, and Iceland (December 21^st), New Zealand (17^th December), Canada (12^th December), recorded the latest overshoot dates. The UK has its plastic Overshoot Day on 3^rd December for 2026, six days earlier than in 2025.

Encouragingly, Plastic Overshoot Day has been moving slightly closer towards the end of the year since the study was first started in 2021, suggesting that global waste management is improving. However, each year there has been a consistent rise in global plastic waste generation, from 202 million tonnes in 2021 to 227 million tonnes in 2026. Therefore, despite an improvement in plastic waste management practices, the overall quantity of mismanaged plastic waste continues to rise, from around 69 million tonnes in 2021 to nearly 72 million tonnes in 2026.

Sarah Perreard, Co-CEO at Earth Action, commented "Consider this date a warning shot. Despite improvements in handling plastic waste, we are still losing; the world is making it faster than any country’s recycling system can cope with”[iii], “Recycling rates flatter some but the millions of tonnes leaking into the environment each year tells the truth. The impact of the exponential growth of waste on the environment, and human health, cannot be ignored.”[iv]

She explains: “This is fixable, but only if we stop the plastic at source instead of chasing it downstream. Limits on production, accountability for polluters, more circular systems incorporating reuse or alternative materials, are all key elements of the change that is needed.  Now government and industry must come together, alongside scientists, to solve a crisis that will only get worse if business as usual continues.”[v]
